Is bamboo the same as Guadua?

All Guaduas are bamboos, but not all bamboos are Guaduas.

Bamboos are a plant subfamily belonging to the grass families (just as sugar cane). Over 1,730 species of bamboo have been identified globally, but only 20 species have industrial use.  There is a vast range of uses for different types of bamboos; some of them are:

  • Food production: drinks and edible sprouts for human and animal consumption.
  • Paper and cardboard production.
  • Textile production.
  • Plywood boards.
  • Strand Woven Bamboo (SWB)
  • Charcoal production.

All of the other species have environmental, eco-systemic, and artisanal interests, but no industrial development has yet been found.

Guadua is a native species from Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela and is one of the 20 species used for industrial purposes. Its scientific name is Guadua angustifolia.

Guadua is commonly used as round bamboo poles for the construction of houses, bridges, warehouses, farm fences, and craftworks.

DEL BAMBU SAS is the American continent pioneer in the industrialization of Guadua, transforming it into solid, laminated, and plywood boards that we call “Bamboo Guadua Wood”

What is a jointless slats board?

A board is a large-format rectangular panel: width greater than 100 centimeters, length greater than 200 centimeters, and thicknesses over 1 centimeter, made up of wooden slats (or strips); glued and pressed.

When referring to lumber from trees, the boards are usually produced by joining the short-slats boards to the panel and then gluing the “elongated” pieces together to form the board.

For the production of our “Bamboo Guadua Wood” the guadua slats have not been cut or joined in their entire length. This characteristic provides higher structural resistance when compared to other timber species and provides structural resistance.

What is a perpendicular plywood board?

It is a multilayer board formed by joining Bamboo Guadua slats in alternating directions so that each slat’s fiber is perpendicular to the other. It means that each panel is in a perpendicular direction from the previous one.

This technique provides our boards with higher mechanical resistance and outstanding dimensional stability. Meaning they are more resistant to distortions caused by different humidity levels, temperature, and solar radiation.

Are all "Del Bambu" products immunized?

Yes! Del Bambu immunizes all of its products with non-polluting methods.

The immunization and sterilization processes are carried out in stainless steel autoclaves, using only water vapor provided by boilers that work with the biomass surpluses generated during operations. Thanks to this, our product’s carbon footprint is reduced significantly.

Are Del Bambu products kiln-dried (chamber dried)?

All of our products have passed a meticulous drying process to guarantee excellent quality.

Every wood must be dried because:

  1. It improves its biological resistance, especially against wood decay (wood rot), insects, fungi, and moho (mold).
  2. Heightens wood’s mechanical properties and improves acoustic, thermal, and electrical resistance.
  3. Gives dimensional stability by minimizing the changes produced by variations in moisture levels.

When the drying process occurs in specialized machinery -like the one found in our facilities- the two main humidity producing components, intracellular humidity and the humidity adhered to the outside of the fibers, can be eliminated.

Once intracellular humidity has been eliminated, it will never come back regardless of the environment’s humidity. On the other hand, the adhered humidity does vary and will match the environment’s humidity.

What products can be manufactured using solid “Bamboo Guadua Wood” boards?

“Bamboo Guadua Wood” has the same versatility of applications that any other timber wood offers, but with the added value of being the most environmentally friendly wood and having better mechanical resistance and hardness than traditional woods.

With the solid boards produced by Del Bambu SAS, the limit is your imagination! Here are some ideas:

  • Desks for Meeting Rooms
  • Tabletops for restaurants and personal use
  • General kitchen furniture (doors and gates)
  • Desks and entertainment centers
  •  Closets.
  • Furniture and chairs.
  • Marquetry for picture frames and mirrors.
  • Architectural coatings for ceilings and walls.

Can I use a CNC when working with “Bamboo Guadua Wood”?

Yes! You can use any CNC type for cutting, carving, drilling, grooving, and milling, and our products won’t lose their structural integrity.

Do I need special tools when working with “Bamboo Guadua Wood”?

“Bamboo Guadua Wood” is a hard-solid wood of high density. Yet, when resizing and cutting our boards, we recommend using equipment that:

  • Have a scoring saw blade before the main cutting blade.
  • Use low cutting speed: If the board is introduced manually, let the worker advance it slowly.
  • Use tungsten or diamond tools and saw blades with a combination of trapezium-flat teeth.

What kind of finishes can be applied to “Bamboo Guadua Wood”?

One of the biggest advantages of “Bamboo Guadua Wood” is that it allows any type of finishing for woods.

  • Dyes.
  • Varnish.
  • Catalyzed Lacquers.
  • Polyurethane lacquers.
  • Water-based lacquers.
  • Natural oils.
  • Shellac.
  • Bee wax. (eco-friendly)

Can “Bamboo Guadua Wood” be used outdoors?

It must be stated that the durability of ANY type of wood depends on three factors:

  1. The natural intrinsic characteristics of each type of wood.
  2. The finishing applied (surface finish) to the wood. Some finishings protect the wood more than others.
  3.  Exposure to atmospheric conditions and sunlight.

When referring to slats boards, it also depends on the type of adhesive used. In Del Bambu, we use MUF type C4 adhesives on our boards. This type of adhesive is ideal for in-doors use. It is resistant to prolonged and frequent exposure to liquids and water vapor condensation.

Our boards are suitable for outdoor use when they are not direct and permanently exposed to atmospheric conditions as rain and solar radiation. But we do not recommend their use when directly exposed to these conditions for an extended period.

In “Bamboo Guadua Wood”, are the color of the wood fiber-grain homogeneous?

The color of the grains seen in the “Bamboo Guadua Wood” is not homogeneous. All of our products exhibit the natural fiber-grain beauty that characterizes the Bamboo Guadua from our Colombian Andean region.

In DEL BAMBU, we firmly believe that preserving the natural aesthetic of “Bamboo Guadua Wood” grains, one of the prettiest attributes of our Guadua, is a tribute we owe to nature.

Bamboo Guadua fibers have a unique coloration, which depends on many factors, some of which are mentioned below.

  • Immunization method: Most Asian producers immunize bamboo using peroxides and other chemically-synthesized derived products, leading to artificial bleaching of the fibers. Thus, achieving uniformity in the color, which, for our judgment, gives the product a synthetic appearance and produces unnecessary pollution.
  • Maturity level: wood-grain color depends on the Guadua’s age. We only harvest mature culms between 5 and 7 years; during these ages, the fibers exhibit their highest physical and mechanical resistance level.
  • Physicochemical properties of the terrain: different terrains provide the guadua fibers with varying patterns of pigmentation.
  • Climate and topographic conditions: rainfall level, solar radiation rate, and slope.

Each “Bamboo Guadua Wood” product, exhibit a unique fiber-grain pattern – like zebra´s stripes or human fingerprints – which is one of the most loved characteristics of our products.
